Background
Priya is the eldest of three children. When her father fell ill and could no longer work, the family's income collapsed. School fees went unpaid, and Priya stayed home to look after her siblings while her mother took up domestic work.
The challenge
By the time our volunteers met the family, Priya had been out of school for almost a year. She had fallen behind, and she believed it was too late to go back.
What we did
We helped re-admit Priya to school, covered her fees and gave her a full school kit — books, uniform, shoes and a bag. She joined our evening tuition class, where volunteer teachers helped her catch up, especially in mathematics and English. We also supported her family with monthly ration so that she would not be pulled out again.
The outcome
Within a year, Priya had caught up with her classmates and finished near the top of her class. She now helps younger children in the tuition centre and dreams of becoming a teacher.
