Background
Kamla Devi lives alone in a single rented room in East Delhi. Over three years, cataract in both eyes had turned her world into a blur. She could no longer thread a needle — the tailoring work that had supported her since her husband passed away.
The challenge
She had been told about surgery, but the thought of hospital queues, costs and recovery with no one to help her kept her from going. She had slowly accepted blindness as part of old age.
What we did
At one of our eye screening camps, volunteers identified her condition and explained, patiently, that it could be treated. The Foundation arranged her surgery through a partner hospital, accompanied her on the day, provided medicines and eye drops, and visited her during recovery to make sure she followed care instructions.
The outcome
Weeks after the surgery, Kamla Devi was able to see clearly again. She has returned to her tailoring and now encourages other women in her lane to attend our eye camps.
